Project STEPS - Strengthening Engagement in Public health research
Introduction
STEPS are the initiative to better the quality of life of inhabitants in Europe as well across the world. The project has been launched since January 2009 with purpose to develop research work on Public health field in Europe, especially focusing on new EU member states (EU 12) by developing tradition of mutual dialogue between various stakeholders – researchers, research organisations, Civil society, professional organisations as well governmental institutions.
The project is implemented by University College London (UK) in cooperation with European Public Health Association (NIVEL) in Netherlands and Asociation “Skalbes” in Latvia. The project is financed by the European Commission in frames of the Seventh Framework Programme. (SiS-2007-1.2.1.1.- CSO capacity building in research). The project has been started in January 2009 and will last till June (April) 2011.
The aim and objectives
The aim of the project is to promote the engagement of civil society organisations in public health research and to better quality of life for Europe’s citizens.
Objectives
• To describe public-health research systems and programmes in individual new EU members states (EU 12)
• To improve engagement of various stakeholders in public health research work
• To develop public health research system in individual new EU member countries (EU 12)
• To promote collective learning in Europe as well in global context.
The activities
For achieving the objectives following activities are chosen to be held during the project:
• Data base of organisations
• National workshops
• International conferences
• Information of society
Results
The result of the project is Assessment focusing on following aspects:
1. What is the current system on public health research in individual new EU countries.
2. What is the role of civil society organisations and other stakeholders regarding the public health research work.
3. The suggestions for developing public health research by engagement various stakeholders.
Impact of the project to research area
The project will support the cohesion of new EU member states within EU 15.
The tradition of having mutual dialogue between various stakeholders will be developed and long-term structures will be established for ensuring engagement.
